Flower Designer – How To Be Judged Positively
The primary position in a florist is the lead flower designer. This job could be fulfilled by the owner, a manager, or another employee and the task is to create designs using flowers. Even though this may seem pretty basic and simple, it is a very critical position. Every completed floral design will be judged and represents the quality and creativity of the florist shop.
The judging of the designers work is extremely subjective. Each person that sees the design will make their judgement based upon personal preferences for design styles and flower choices. There is no set of common criteria used in making decisions about whether a person likes or dislikes a floral arrangement. In fact, there is not a standard criteria list which is used by everyone. To further convolute matters, judging actually comes from more than just one or two people – they come from the recipient, the customer who placed the order, and third party observers (anyone else who sees the arrangement). Therefore it is virtually impossible to please everyone with each design that is created.
The goal for a designer is to create arrangements that meet customer requirements. This will ultimately help to minimize or eliminate any negative judgements. To reinforce this point, the most important element that a designer must take into account is designing to the customer requirements. Other skills that help a flower designer to receive positive ratings are having a passion for flowers, and combining that love with lots of creativity and artistic talents to design incredible floral arrangements.
Creating floral designs that catch a viewers eyes is a skill which good flower designers have. Just like an artist who creates a piece of artwork that captures the viewers attention, the florist needs to be able to create a design that pulls a viewer into a floral design. When pullled into the design, the viewer experiences something that must be good about the designer. It will help them to think positively about the designer.
There are three types of flower designers – designers that create arrangements based upon following floral design recipes which others originally created, those who create custom-made flower designs for each order, and those that can do both. It is not a given that the judgement will be good for each of these types of designers. However, the judging really comes down to whether or not the resulting design is liked by the customer and fits with their preferences. Since each type can receive positive feedback on their designs, it really doesn’t matter which one to choose to become. It will come down to how much creativity and artistic license one prefers to exercise as the same excellent customer service skills are required for each type.
The flower designs made by sticking to a recipe, formula or following a picture are not the most imaginative and certainly are not original. These types of flower designs are expected from floral shops that satisfy orders for FTD, Teleflora, 1-800Flowers, and other flower wire companies. This is because customers order a floral design based upon a photo or image and request the exact same thing. It is likened to a franchise where you order from a menu and that’s what you get, no matter which franchise you visit.
The person that creates a uniquely designed floral creation per order without following any recipes or formulas is called a custom flower designer. A custom floral designer creates designs based upon an in-depth conversation with the customer. These designers are by and large the most creative of all designers and they use more artistic skills than those that follow a design recipe. Think of this type of floral arranger as the daring florist — one that does not conform to the blueprint floral recipes and instead makes the most astonishing floral designs. Their creations are incredibly interesting and rightfully gets viewers to remember the flowers.
There are florists that are amazing flower designers and they don’t have much previous experience – they possess natural talents for creating beautiful designs and receive positive feedback on their design. There are others that require instruction and training before being able to create fabulous designs and receiving the good feedback. For those who fall into the latter case, the designer should seek out and take training classes as well as locating potential mentorship possibilities. Together these will help the person to enhance their skills and increase the amount of good reviews they receive. Also those in this latter category may do best, at least in the beginning, working in a designer position that follows recipes or formulas.
